Don Cherry, Sour Grapes

Gearing up for another hockey season. Leafs' got their parade date booked!

An old Hockey Night in Canada clip from 1986.

0:15 - Adams Division? Norris? Smythe? Team in Winnipeg?

0:35 - Coach's Corner! Though I don't recognize the theme. lol @ the cheesy 80s graphics.

0:55 - Who's the dude in the teal blazer? Where's Ron McLean? Reffing minor hockey somewhere...

1:10 - Cherry's suit is understated here. His wardrobe's gotten proressively more flamboyant over the years. Don Cherry's actually the most conservatively-dressed guy on screen!

1:40 - What's gotten Don in a pickle? Some Oiler fans had the audacity to boo The Great One! Maybe they had a point... this was the year Edmonton didn't win the cup.

1:50 - Close-up on Grapes... Little more hair on the head, little less on the chin. And that's some amateur camera-work there. Wher ewas this filmed? The CBC's production values have improved.

2:05 - Obligatory Bobby Orr anecdote.

3:02 - "And now they'll boo you" - good zinger Dave. Old Hodge plays a good foil.

3:30 - Only 2 minutes of airtime for Don?

Don isn't so outrageous here. No hysterics, no tantrums, no 7-second delay, manages to stay on topic - he's actually relatively sedate in this one. All that's missing are the highlight reels of bad calls, jabs at Russians, shout outs to Stevie Yzerman, Dougie and the armed forces, advice to "all you kids out there", "how much time is left"... and Ron's puns.

RIP John Hughes

The King of Coming-of-Age Comedy

Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller, Weird Science, Uncle Buck... National Lampoon & Home Alone - so many great movies. Hughes' movies were funny, deep and had heart. And if you were a white upper-middle class 80s teen from the Chicago suburbs/Winneka, Illinois... they really really spoke to you.

There will never be another

Ominous words...
    Wednesday, June 15, 2005

...Michael Jackson remains an enigma. He is likely a more enigmatic figure today than he was at anytime throughout much-publicized lifetime. Here is a man who transformed from a poor black boy to a rich white woman; a man who transcends the demarcations of race, sex, and age.

...He is likely today the most famous man in the world. To his most devout fans, he’s a messianic figure. To most others, he’s a 46-year old black man trapped in the body of an anorexic white woman’s with a mental age of an 11 year old boy – a freakshow that’s completely lost touch with reality.

Given all his troubles – a scarred reputation, slumping album sales, financial debts – can Jackson rebound? He certainly can.

...So be prepared – I predict MJ will make a comeback, and he’ll be as strong as ever.

Sadly we will now never see it.

The rise and fall of Michael Jackson is truly a modern day epic tragedy. But your music, your philanthropy, your kindness touched billions. There will never be another.

Rest in peace Michael.

Michael Jackson was an excellent musician and dancer, despite whatever other oddities he had (and he certainly had them). Mother Theresa didn't die here, nor did your grandmother, but I think we can all see a tragedy here nevertheless. He is smybolic of a dying musical era and we can only hope that he will pull a Tupac and release another 5 albums.

R.I.P. MJ

Good post Sen! It's funny how everybody has suddenly jumped on the MJ bandwagon again. As if he needed to die to be appreciated. At least you've always supported him - even through the bad times.

I've heard that MJ has a ton of recorded songs saved somewhere, so I'm hoping his family will pull a Tupac (as Mike said) and release it.

As much as people say crap, MJ touched us all. Just look at a club when Billie Jean comes on. Everyone has at least one memory. MJ was an icon and will never been forgotten.

RIP MJ.

Red Pill

Something often overlooked is just how critical the early onset of puberty is on a young man's development.

Think of the guy that guy that hits puberty at 12. He's suddenly shot eight inches overnight. He's got a baritone voice, he's growing a dirty sanchez, he's towering over the pipsqueaks beneath him. Adults treat him like an adult instead of a little boy, he's on sports teams, girls are interested in him.

Contrast that with a late bloomer. He's got it rough all through middle and during the early high school years. Guys are constantly tooling him since he's smaller, girls don't pay him attention. He catches up eventually, but by then the psychological scars are set in, internalized, and it takes a hell of a lot to summon the strength to shed those shackles.

I was the latter. Fortunately being tagged as one of the "smart kids" granted me a measure of respect, and in that sense I was conferred "alpha" status in the crew of overachieving immigrant brown & Asian kids that I rolled with. Girls weren't in our radar and we weren't in theirs, and one can only imagine the torment that a skinny brown kid in a John Hughes-esque white suburban school would have been subject to - you carry that baggage with you through life.

A lot of guys don't hit their stride till their mid 20s - the guys that assiduously hit the books instead of screwing around smoking dope... And the guys that picked on you? They're pumping gas. Of course some dudes are just plain social retards, but the guy with the quick wit, clothes and coin could suddenly be swimming in tail. And when girls you once considered out of your league are suddenly showing interest, it's jarring as you must now re-evaluate where you stand.

Certainly this is liable to make one frazzled, even insecure. It's like the fat guy who works out and gets buff - in his mind, he's still fat; the internalized psychological baggage is hard to overcome. Is it you they're really after, or your wallet? Is it you they're interested in, or what you can do for them?

But really, for us guys today, when is it ever really about YOU anyway? It doesn't take long for one to realize that most yuppie city girls in their 20s are absolute superficial status whores - and you're just an accessory to their lifestyle.

Look at the guys at the multiplex with the girls you want to nail and it's almost comical to note how much they all conform to the same aesthetic. Faux hawk? Check. Kanye West aviator Ray-bans? Check. Air Force Ones? Check. Lacoste golf shirt? Check. Tattooed, buff? Check. It's not YOU in and of itself that they find attactive, it's how much YOU conforms to the societal, media-dicatated standard of what's in, what's hot. It's got nothing to do with what's up in your head and in your heart.

And once you swallow that red pill and see the matrix, it's disillusioning. And so it's up to every young male today to confront this quagmire - either fight the game and be miserable, or accept things as they are and play the game.

Clip from my favourite show at 4:40 explains this perfectly... guy sounds so much like me.

Your Fatal Flaw Sen is you are too self-conscience.Stop psycho-analyzing yourself, stop looking back at your history, and move on. Take more risks in life, and above all grow a spine! I know you are going through a phase, and all of us have gone through similar phases, but as your friend please heed my advice. If anything watch Scrubs, it’s a far superior show to Freaks and Geeks. If you finally watch either this or the Wire, I’ll back off from giving you advice and harassing you over the internet.

As well, become a teacher and help society, if you believe your theories to be true.

Frankly, this whole post is hogwash. What the heck are air force ones? Apparently you read this book called "The Game." Now I don't know anything about it but judging from your recent blogs i wouldn't be enamored with it. You should pull a Fahrenheit 451 and torch it, take a deep breath, take things in stride and I have to agree with Tristan, quit overanalyzing everything.

Keep it real homies.

Hooking a Brother Up

Snippets from an MSN conversation.

dont be selfish. i offered
what did you offer?
to set you up with a good decent guy with a future. you wanted no part
who's this guy?
you're curious
just wanna know who it is
he's 24. engineer
that really means nothing to me
well what do you want to know
what's his name?
********
what's his down side?
huh? what kind of question is that
what's bad about him?
wow
everyone has their good points. what matters is the bad, that's the deciding factor
well thats for you to figure out right
no. i rather know up front. if he's your friend you should know

i wouldnt hang with him if he's not a good guy
yeh but what do you not like about him? or is he a mama's boy?
somewhat
anyway, i don't like that
what?
mama's boys
he's not
you just said he is somewhat
he's not a guy looking to score on the first night. if you want a guy like that he's not it
i said i didn't want a mama's boy. how did you connect that with scoring on the first night? but if he's a mama's boy....i'm not interested. i'm sure he's got lots of great qualities
i dont get it
i can't tolerate mama's boys
HE IS NOT A MAMA'S BOY
you said he was somewhat
no his mom doesnt tie his shoe laces or wipe his ass. but does he live at home? yes
that's not really what constitutes a mama's boy. that's just a spoiled child
so what do you mean by a mama's boy. i dont think were on the same page here
does he deffer to his mother's opinion for everything?
if he still deferred to his mom he's not coming out clubbing on richmond st. friday nite
maybe his mom doesn't object
i dont know i havent met his mom. but he's a good guy funny smart. good job

why's he single?
says he hasnt found the right one
that's what everyone says
well thats true. why are you single
i'm just a mean, mean person
he's single by choice. but he knows me. and knowing what i know of you onilne you would click
why would you wanna set up your friend with someone who you says acts like an entitled princess?
because believe it or not some guys actually dig that
if that's why you think we'd click. then you got it all wrong. obviously. i'm a nice person. hmpf

i know. and he is too. what else did you want to konw
who knows. is he hot?
he's a good looking guy
i see
i see i've piqued your interest
meh. how tall is he?
average. taller than you
i like really tall guys. 5'10" +
that's tall?
it's gotta be mroe than that. but that will do
yeh. sounds right
kk

u know what. what do you have to offer
i never said i was offering anything :S
lol at ur checklist
hmm?
dont care about his interests, dont care abotu what he's into, dont care about his head or his heart.the stuff that matters
from what you said i gathered he's a nice guy. that's why i asked what's wrong with him
lol, u just instantly have to find some way to discredit him.

so you want to talk to this guy ?
talk to him? now?
no. ill pass ur digits on to him
no. i don't want my number passed around
so you want his number?
no. whenever all three of us are online. add him in or something. i don't really wanna talk on the phone and stuff. it's too forced anc cliche
haha waht is this high school still
i don't like set ups. rather not do that
k ill get him online soontimes. meantime u got any hoes for me
hoes? what am I? a madam?
i just pimped out one of my gigalos. u know what i mean
not really. i don't have a any female asian friends for you
they dont have to be asian
i only have one single girl friend. and she doesn't like you
she's never met me
she's read your posts

Pulled Over

Got pulled over by ridecheck once on Kingston Rd. Dark, foggy night. Very few cars on the road. Rain is in the midst. I pull the window down.

And... the cop... looks just like... T-1000!

I freak out. I want to step on the gas. Then I had freakish visions of T-1000 chasing me down...

Told the guy I had absolutely nothing to drink that night. He told me to turn off the high beams, asked me if I knew John Connor, and let me go.

Hahaha. Should have told him you have a gun that shoots liquid nitrogen, so he'd best back off.
