Bill C-10

Under the federal government's proposed Bill C-10, Canadian produced film or television deemed "offensive" in nature will be denied public funding in the form of tax credits. Much furor has been raised from the industry in Canada, with bigshot Canadian stars such as Sandra Oh claiming the proposed bill as a form of government censorship. I don't think Sandra Oh et al quite understand what censorship really is. The said "offensive" material can still be produced and released, the Canadian population just isn't going to help pay for it. While I agree that it is a slippery slope to decide where to draw a line on which content is deemed inappropriate, my question is why should any production be receiving public funding at all? Regardless of content, there is nothing preventing the producers from getting money from private sources.

Smiley, I agree with you 100% on this one. While I do think government has a place in some things (ie. education and healthcare), it has no place in the entertainment industry.
