Canada: A Cruel and Self-Serving Nation?

I'm sure most of you by now have read and heard news stories about the annual seal hunt. As Brock Campbell would have told you: it's been a tradition since Europeans first settled in the east coast and has been a major source of income for many seasonal workers in Newfoundland - Canada's poorest province. However, it recently became front page news when a cocky and misinformed ex-Beatle, Paul McCartney, appeared on CNN and debated against it showing outspoken support for the seals.

Initially, I was like, "whatever". I'm not a Newfoundlander or an animal activist so I really had no reason to care, but recently another incredibly ignorant musician has been giving Canada some negative press. That's right... CANADA! Not just Newfoundland.

Read this...

"...Construction of German gas chambers also provided work for someone - this is not a moral or sound reason for allowing suffering. If you can, please boycott Canadian goods. It WILL make a difference. As things stand, Canada has placed itself alongside China as the cruelest and most self-serving nation."
- The entire article can be found here

This individual who obviously doesn't like Canada has refused to tour here in protest of the seal hunt. Interestingly, however, this same Manchester singer recently played a few shows in the U.S. - a country that always seems to be at war. Is a baby seal that much cuter than a human?? And what about his home country where foxes are hunted?? Pitchford Media made some good points about that.

Last Friday's Imprint also had a good article stating that the seal population has skyrocketed since the 70s and the way in which they are killed (using a tool known as the "hakapik") is actually quite civilized when compared to methods used by slaughterhouses, according to the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. As well, any remains would feed a variety of scavenger populations. Basically, the seal hunt is environmentally sound and gives the Newfoundland economy some much needed help. So all those animal activists can go eat their own testicles.

I, along with many other Canadian fans, won't be buying Morrissey's new album this week.

The seal hunt outrage shows the hypocrisy of these do-gooder musicians/pseudo-animal rights activists. Really, their outrage has nothing more than to do with the fact that seal pups are “cute” – how come nobody gives a shit how chickens, cows and pigs are treated.

We are humans, being on top of the food chain, (or web as in Geo) its our god given duty to eat lesser animals. Hell the Maltese eat rabits, the French have their frogs, every nation has their exotic animal they chose to eat, so leave Newfoundland and Canada alone for that matter.
