Anniversary
So it’s February 2006 and this marks the one-year anniversary of 125columbia.blogspot.com
I'm not exactly sure how the idea of a group blog came out, but it’s been a good run so far. Blogs are everywhere but group blogs are rare so we’re like innovators in that regard. And, in that one-year run, we've increased our popularity, being one of the top ranked sites on the UW blogring. We now average about 18 hits/day. Admittedly, about a quarter of those are by the staff, but along our run we’ve picked up quite a few fans. We were cited on UW’s StudentLifeCentre blog. And along the way we've had people stumble upon our blog while seeking everything from strip clubs in waterloo to russell peters quotes to single tamil men in Toronto.
My memory is a bit foggy, but I think it started out with just James and me. We thought it'd be a good way to share our thoughts and our zany antics. Brock Campbell came on board quite some time later and now is one of the more active members of the blog. Smiley posted, then promptly deleted, his first two posts, threatened to boycott, did boycott, then came back, and now appears to be back in retirement. Mr. Mercieca had a few paranoid things to say, but has now disappeared. (Did the CIA get him?) And then there’s Eddie, whom we invited and who posted once, but hasn’t been heard form since.
The topics of discourse are as diverse as the cast itself, and have ranged from Canadian politics to song reviews to UW idiosyncrasies. And through-and-through we’ve managed to keep our content fresh, interesting and relevant, avoiding the incessant angst-filled whininess one comes across on most blogs. So props all around.
We can do a few things to make it better though. There are 5 or 6 of us, but the posting frequency is pretty light (quality, not quantity right?). Let’s try to aim for at least 3 posts/week. Right now James and I account for about 2/3 of the posts here, and one thing this blog can benefit from is more diverse input. We don’t care what you post about, so long as it's interesting.
