The Elusive WASP
WASPs are White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. I think of WASPs as the silent cogs that make the engine run. They’re the kids you sat beside in school with plain white-bread surnames like Peterson and Cunningham and Farnsworth and Taylor. They’re the sort of people that dominated Toronto in the days of “Toronto the Good.” Today, they’re kind of invisible in Toronto’s ethnic tapestry but they’re the silent engine that makes the city work. Despite its multiculturalism and the fact that it’s today about 75% non-WASP, Toronto is still at its essence a very WASP city – its WASPs that laid the foundation for what is today an orderly, diverse, and prosperous global city.
WASPs come in all socio-economic classes but they do share certain characteristics. WASPs don’t flaunt their wealth, and if they do harbour it they’re humble about it; they won’t say irritating things like "I’ll challenge you with my wallet", as a Jewish housemate of ours was fond of saying. It's not uncommon for a WASP with a hefty trust fund to drive a modest car.
WASPs don’t have strong ties to extended families. Nor do they see themselves as belonging to an "ethnic group." As such, they are not clannish, nor do they feel a sense of “group solidarity” to a subgroup - their ties are to the nation-state foremost. As such, they have a greater sense of civic duty, civic responsibility, civic activism. WASPs give to philanthropic causes – indeed, they have a genuine compassion for fellow humanity, something that is lacking among “lesser” groups.
WASPs are obsessed with structure, order, and cleanliness. WASPs like schedules and timelines. WASPs are law-abiding, and like neat suburbs and are obsessive about keeping a tidy house, and a green, trim lawn.
If one can quibble about, it is the fact that the WASP is a little boring and mundane, not nearly as loud or egregious as his distant Mediterranean cousins. The WASP is guarded and reserved, private and generally not prone to exhibiting a wide, open, sincere smile. Indeed, the WASP is a repressed - he feels guilt in hedonistic pleasures, does not share the “joie de vivre” of his French peers, and harbours a definite work-oriented mentality. And while the WASP enjoys making money, he does not obsess over it. The ideal pleasure for a WASP is a cottage in the quiet of coutry.
But WASP is not prone to dogma or superstition, preferring a practical, rational approach. And the WASP is open-minded and tolerant, among his more admirable traits. He likes open dialogue, and a civil, reasoned discussion. He is fair in his interactions, never quick to judge. He will not hate simply hate someone for who he is or the caste he belongs to; it is his behaviour that is the prime factor in his judgement, and so long as he works hard, obeys the law, pays taxes, and assimilates certain WASP-esque qualities, the WASP will show his respect.
The more I think about it, the more I think I’m really a WASP in disguise. I believe I share more common qualities with WASPs than I do my own people, for Sri Lankan Tamils in many ways are the anti-WASPs - clannish, dogmatic, disorderly, superstitious... qualities I don't find appealing.
I think the WASP ethos is admirable, and so too does much of the world, for the overwhelming tide of humanity is moving towards WASP and WASP-derivative nations – England, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand... Mind you, it could be that the dynamic dragon economies of the xenophobic Far East will never open their borders to the swarthy hordes, and the oil-rich sheikhdoms of the Arab Gulf treat even “lesser” Muslims from Bangladesh and Pakistan like crap (I know of many people that have done the double-migration - Subcontinent -> Middle East -> Canada). Continental Europe isn’t too kind to its coloured immigrants, and Latin America is a non-entity.
So if the overwhelming mass of humanity would immigrate to these five nations if given the choice, is this not an indictment of cultural relativism, and implicit admission of the superiority WASP values and WASP-based societies?

some major generalizations taking place here. Just like a typical wasp in my opinion.

"The more I think about it, the more I think I’m really a WASP in disguise."
7/07/2007 06:50:00 PMI think you have to lose those flashy banana republic shirts in favour of something generic from moore's or tip top tailor. Then for sure you'll be a true WASP!!

Sen, I'm sorry but I just fundamentally disagree.
7/08/2007 04:29:00 AM1) Not all WASPS are as you say they are (I'd argue most are not, it's just a select few)
2) You ignore the negative aspects of WASP culture
2) You ignore that other cultures share these values
let's look at modern wasps:
feel guilt about hedonistic pleasures?
What about mass numbers of rich druggies and alcoholics that I see - shooting up or drinking away their trust funds - where is the guilt to stop them there
The numbers of children that are over-medicated in this society?
is this not the society that has the most rifts between parents and children? The largest number of broken homes?
Where is all this in your talk about this "glorious society"????
It's not as widespread a problem in the homes of immigrants...
Are perhaps not these ideals you speak of only in certain exemplery figures and for the most part absent in this north american society?
Certain WASPS are disillusioned with what was promised them in this society. And now they look to other cultures to teach them what they've been missing... they turn to buddhism or they turn to the natural simplicity and sensuality of other cultures... they turn their eye out to the world, rather than within...
And not prone to dogma or superstition??? Who are the leading fundamentalists in the US? They aren't Muslims. They are racist Christians...
What the heck is Anne Coulter? Not an immigrant. Thank GOD!
Who dismissed people who actually studied Iraq and had relevant knowledge about Iraq in favour of people who were known only for their conservative biases and NO previous knowledge of IRAQ?
And who is paying dearly for this mistake?
WASPS
And this WASP work culture that you speak of... perhaps it comes at the expense of all others cherishable life goods.
At the expense of family, at the expense of enjoying life's little pleasures... This is a society that works itself into a spiritual death...
Maybe we need a bit of italian love of sensuality and family values... to offset the huge numbers we exhibit for clinical depression.
They aren't clannish?? What about the long-standing wars against the Irish and the English? Is this just a story?
The colonization of India??? Was that an act of civility?
I think what you have picked and chosen are the aspects of modern ideals that reside within each country's people in differing numbers...
People all over the world embrace these ideals that you've spoken of - as a result of modernity - of industrialization and the freedoms it creates among a priviledged educated class...
I think WASP was too broad of a term to use here... and though it has good aspects - is not to be idealized at the expense of the vast rich cultures of other ethnicities...

Jane - you’re making a mountain out of a molehill! I don’t know what my post has to do with the Iraq war or colonialism or Ann Coulter. No doubt WASPs too have their fair share of problems; family breakdown is more common and I did mention that they don’t have strong ties to family (this is a liability as well as an asset), but I’m thinking more at the macro, societal-level.
7/09/2007 02:07:00 PMI was speculating about the society we have in Canada today – which I view as an evolved ideal (prosperity + tolerance) - and how much of that is a function of the WASP culture that laid the foundation for it. I defined my interpretation of that culture in the post. And I was speculating – do present-day human migration patterns concede the pre-eminence of WASP-based societies? Or are people merely going to move wherever they can find work, and it just so happens that the Anglosphere is the most tolerant (except maybe Holland).
