Jack Layton needs a lesson in Macroeconomics 101

Most economists would tell you that the NDP leader’s platform policy to rescind future reductions in corporate tax rates in Canada is an ill-advised idea. Layton would have you believe that reducing corporate taxes would just be lining the pockets even further of Big Oil and other evil corporations that corrode our society, when that revenue could otherwise be used to subsidize the hard hit auto and manufacturing sectors to bring back the jobs that have been lost due to the appreciated Canadian dollar and recent economic turmoil. It would just plain be a waste of economic resources to take money from the public coffer in the form of subsidies in order to try to keep these jobs afloat, when on the other hand, lower corporate taxes and the resulting increase in after-tax margins would stimulate business investment in Canada and thus lead to an influx of newer jobs more suitable to our country’s current economic environment, that might otherwise have been established in other more tax-friendly environments.

Curiously, Green Party leader Elizabeth May would like to reduce our collective wealth and depreciate the dollar to revive our manufacturing industry. I am curious to know how she would go about accomplishing this since Parliament is independent of the BoC and has zero say in monetary policy.

This is unrelated to my post but a quick comment about the cut in arts funding.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhgv85m852Q

I want Mr. Rivard to be my investment advisor. Apparently if I give him $1000 to invest in the arts, he will be able to turn it into $11,000 !!

uh, yeah right!?!? Ok, so with an ROI of 11 to 1, what is the problem with cutting government funding of the arts entirely? There should be no problem in finding private investors to undecuple (i had to look that up!) their money. And if the rate of return is so high then how come there are so many artists who would otherwise struggle to get by without a generous government grant?

Just something to think about when Margaret Atwood et al spew out these ridiculous statistics...

I 100% agree with you on this Smiley. While in Thunderbay, I attended a Jack Layton rally, though I will admit, he is arguably the most charismatic party leader running, his ideas are impossible to implement. He came to Thunderbay, with the pretense that if he were elected PM, he would make new jobs in the forest industry. He didn't say how, but explained that it was Harper's fault for the decline in this industry. Lakehead U, is similar to that of Waterloo, its a university town, home to several thousand students. Despite coming to Thunderbay, he neglected to mention how he would help students, as he normally does in Toronto, and made a several negative comments about Toronto and Bay Street that I found offensive. He argued that Bay Street was stealing jobs from Thunderbay! After his speech, I have lost all faith in the NDP, and have become increasingly more conservative. Good post Smiley, its good to read some conservative rhetoric from people are own age from time to time.

Two great quotes, both from Winston Churchill.

“If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain.”

“The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.”

^ Hahahaha. I love that guy. I took Intro to Microeconomics with him.

"Mother Google, Mother Google. Innovation, you must innovate! You want to be a code monkey? The Indians are going to take your jobs."

Yep, this girl who was sitting next to me even created a Larry Smith Bingo card with all of his common sayings.
