Roadtrip Rules

I had a chat with some colleagues today about roadtrips and the tension they can cause between friends. Yes, roadtrips are a lot of fun... i think most of us agree with that.. however, people can get very moody after spending many hours together in a car. I've been on a good number of roadtrips and have played every possible role: driver, navigator, and backseat passenger. For that reason, I understand that ANYONE can get annoyed very easily, and so it is important that each person be a good sport. Personally, I've never had any bad experiences, but there were definitely moments when it was obvious that somebody was annoyed.

So based on my own experiences, as well as what I've heard from others, I've decided to compile a list of rules that each person can consider on their next roadtrip:

Rules for the Driver

1. Always remember that out of everyone in the group, you are most likely to get pissed off. Take extra caution and control your emotions.

2. It's ok not to rely too much on the navigator, but not to the extent that you risk safety (eg. avoid accidents by letting the navigator look around for signs and landmarks).

3. Be considerate of the passengers' needs. Make pit stops when food or washroom breaks are needed.

4. It's about the journey, not the destination. It is nice to stop and look around once in a while.

Rules for the Navigator

1. YOUR JOB IS HARD!! Good attention to detail is required. You must be alert at all times and be able to think on your feet. If the driver gets lost, you are to blame for the wasted time and gas!

2. Do not get exit numbers and highway numbers mixed up! They are two completely different things!

3. Don't just mindlessly read off directions. Always be aware of your location and where you are headed.

4. Let the driver have the final say on the music. However, most drivers are nice enough to eventually let you choose anyways.

Rules for the Backseat Passenger:

1. Remember that you are a backseat passenger, NOT a backseat driver! ..unless, of course, you are asked to be one. But in most cases, the driver is a smart person who has a good sense of direction.

2. Realize that the navigator's task is more difficult than the driver's (even though the driver has more responsibility), so give him/her some credit!

3. Keep in mind that driving long distances can be boring and tiring. Either let the driver have his/her music or keep him/her entertained.

4. Be aware that pictures might be taken while you are asleep.

5. Drivers are emotionally sensitive and need to be loved. They usually appreciate a nice gift at the end of the trip (thanks again for the shirt: Jane/Sen/Tristan)

Tristan, the beauty of a roadtrip is we can go anywhere (within driving distance)... and we can leave our decisions until the last minute. We were thinking east coast of Canada. I was also thinking Northeastern US.

I'll want to know the exact dates, and if possible what cities we aim to hit. It doesn't have to be perfect.

If we're feeling ambitious:

Toronto -> Montreal

Montreal -> Quebec

Quebec -> Fredericton

Fredericton -> Moncton

Moncton -> Cape Breton

Cape Breton -> Halifax

Halifax -> Saint John

Saint John -> Portland, Maine

Portland, Maine -> Boston

Boston -> Hartford

Hartford -> Syracuse

Syracuse -> Toronto

That's 12 days.

We probably wouldn't do that many cities... but definitely Halifax and parts of northeastern US. Wouldn't mind seeing some Jays farm teams in Syracuse or Manchester.
