What the hell is an actuary?
I get asked this a lot. Comedian D.L. Hughley had the same question last week on CNN. Funny stuff.
Good seeing actuaries getting exposure. I like Hughley's new show. And his stand-up is good.
Speaking of actuaries, not being too thrilled about the job I had, I'd been on the job search for a few months. Scored at a consulting firm downtown. Goodbye to redonkulous commutes. A lawyer acquaintance likened the job search and the interview process to dating, and I see the parallels. You put your best face forward. Sometimes they're receptive. You put on your best clothes and front with your best behaviour. They pepper you with questions and you say shit to impress them, and if things go well at that point you flip the script and soon they're trying to impress you. If there's a connection things progress. Or you cut loose and run.
Things have been on the up since the Obama administration. Something must be said about Hope and Change. I like this cat - he's already doing good things and undoing the bad of the previous admin. And since girls are dumb and fickle, their preferences dictated by the media and magazine covers, this kid is wondering if all the single young things with their coochies dripping wet for Obama will result in a boon of poon for well-spoken dark-skinned guys the next 4 years.
A few weeks late on the new year's resolutions, but other goals -
- Pass the prelim exams.
- Build muscle mass.
- Get wheels. Now that I'm off campus, living out in the burbs and not having a car is seriously cramping my lifestyle and my game. Renting beaters from the Lebanese guy up the street on weekends is losing its lustre.
- Meet more young professionals.
- Be alpha.
Update promised in 3 months.

Sen, I do like your goals, but what does actuarial work or the video have anything to do with Obama?
1/27/2009 05:23:00 PMSpeaking of which, I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed with this man. He is not the messiah. He's just a half black guy that speaks real nice and says "hope" and "change" a lot.

Great Find. Love the interview. Finally someone breaks down what an actuary ACTUALLY does. Didn't know Milton Friedman was into ActSci...nice fact.
1/27/2009 10:19:00 PMAlso great news on the new job! Like the dating analogy.
And yeah, Obama's expectations are astoundingly high. But to Counter mike, he is exceptionally competent. Able to work with a variety of people and has a clear vision of what he wants to achieve. He makes sense in the shit he says. Accepts criticism, opinion and promotes discussion. Not stubbornly ideological.
He does have a hard task up ahead, but then again, as President he just orders things to be done, it's his staff that executes.
It should be a great couple of years!
PS. Love the fact that his first international trip is to Canada.
