Students in Politics
This post goes out to Sen, who convinced that a post I had written in my personal blog should be here. So here it is, well part of it anyways...
Its friday, so that means another edition of the school paper is out. I have destroyed the paper in the past, but its free and produced by the school, so I am kinda obligated to read it, even if its garbage. The front page story grabbed my attention. It was about the results of Waterloo's election. A rookie politician became mayor defeating the predicted winner. This bitch won because of her second goal: "to crack down on rowdy students". This goes to show that this city, hates students. There is no reference here to helping us, even though we represent 20 percent of the population, but instead we are targeted and attack like bloody dogs that no one wants. This goes to show you what politics is really like, undemocractic and bullshit. Voting, needs to be modified, and new councils must be formed to better represent us, otherwise stupid mayors will exploit the only group that votes, (old people, sorry the elderly) and continue putting students down. I propose that our student government creates a lobbby group that has a direct link to the city of waterloo. The two parties could then meet from time to time and discuss issues within this city. Afterall we do represent 20 fucking percent of the population here, yet we are constantly ignored! and mislabled. Remember this Babyboomers, you are getting old, and if you are not nice to us, i promise you your last days on this Earth will suck. Why, well the standards that you have created are pushing the best minds to go elsewhere, places were people do accept 'us' for who we are and the skills we posses. **cough cough USA, EUROPE***
I would just like to add, that we students have done more good for this community than bad. Being called rowdy pissed me off because, our generation is not rowdy. Look at the babyboomers, they had the hippy movements and did crazy shit, we, on the other hand hide our drug and drinking issues in the basements of dingy houses, and all we ask for is to play loud music, were doing nothing bad here. Our government the waterloo one in particular needs to reform to include us (us I mean the students). This is the only way to fix this problem and make the system more democratic. Voting isnt enough, voting was the sollution of the 19th and 20th centuries, its now the 21st, and more needs to be done.

I think you touch upon a pretty good subject here - inter-generational conflict.
11/23/2006 09:36:00 PMThe problem is, our generation is way too apathetic. Whereas the baby boom generation was actively engaged in politics, we're too busy swamped with papers & exams, not to mention juggling multiple part-time jobs and to pay off our loans and fretting about finding our first entry-level job to worry about this democracy business.
It's all the worse because of the demographic shift - we're actually one of the few generations in history that is actually smaller size-wise than our parents.
All the more ironic to see 40-50 somethings call us rowdy because these complaints are being leveled at us from the rowdiest, most entitled generation in memory - the babyboomers.

"There is no reference here to helping us, even though we represent 20 percent of the population..."
11/24/2006 01:12:00 PMSo how much of that 20% actually voted in the municipal election? Probably not that much, and if that's the case we don't deserve to be getting drunk or playing loud music. There are far too many sheeps that go to our school.

Perhaps James, but it doesnt excuse the current situation. I am not asking for a communist upheaval, I simply think as busy as we are as students, we deserve more. The fact as sen has shown of the majority of students being indebt and busy, is the way the system remains as it is, and why there is little opposition to it. Therefore something needs to be done. God Damn it!

The "we're so busy" excuse is crap and you know. You don't have 5 minutes to spare to catch up on world/local news? Don't have 5 minutes to take time out of your day to vote? But I'm sure you have 5 minutes to go drink... 5 minutes to MSN your friends... There is a huge difference between not caring and not having time.
11/24/2006 07:29:00 PMJames hit it on the head... we don't deserve representation if we don't take the time to demand it.
Also, since voting isn't enough, let's give a group of people the power to make decisions... oh wait, that's never really worked...

IMO it's a chicken-egg thing. Students don't care because they don't think their voices are heard. But students voices aren't heard because they don't bother to shout.
11/24/2006 07:50:00 PMTristan is definetely an anomaly.

The problem is that everyone can point out what the problem is, but can never figure out what to do to fix it or just don't bother trying to find that solution.
11/27/2006 09:49:00 PMHeh :)
So how do we get students to start caring more and voting?

Playing the devil's advocate here... Is the fact that students are so apolitical these days such a bad thing? Put the student population of UW and Laurier together. Now imagine if we had 30,000 Tristans. Waterloo would be a place of squabblers and chaos! Everyone would want their way. Protests and demonstrations left, right, and centre.
11/27/2006 10:21:00 PMAs I wrote before I think that there’s a societal benefit to the apolitical materialistic zeal that today's university kids have – when people are fixated on making money, there’s no room for squabbling, because there's a (selfish) vested interest in keeping the peace so we fulfill each other's needs.
My motto is better a nation of capitalists than one of politicians!

If a man is not a socialist by the time he is 20, he has no heart.
11/28/2006 08:53:00 AMIf he is not a conservative by the time he is 40, he has no brain.

Great Quote Pierce. (Even though i dislike churchill, he had some great lines.
11/28/2006 05:43:00 PMAs for you sen, the Kitchener community would benefit more with 30,000 Tristan's. It would be a Utopia! :p
