"I just wanna chill and twist a lot... Catch suns in my 7-45 "
So Eddie and the Yamz came to the Loo this weekend, which, of course, would entail an interesting weekend filled with a mix of erudite conversation and drunken debauchery.
The last time, Eddie and Steve came up, and that night the conversation was deep - the meaning of religion, Ouiji boards, Obama's bid for the presidency, race relations... And while this time conversation at Mirage, the Korean place at UW plaza, flirted with Canadian politics the new naturalized citizenship legislation, the night-time living room banter somehow got sidelined, and was of a much more raucous nature... heard sex being mentioned a lot.
Then out came the guitars, Brijesh's outrageous take on Punjabi MC, and Pyo's ridiculously hilarious acoustic country rendition of 50cent's 21 Questions. I don't think any of us laughed so hard in months. Beer and wine definetely played a part. Finally, two hours past midnight we walked Jane and Jackie off and escaped the cold only to come home and be subject to Italian porn on Telatino and a very crunked chigger Yam's racist ravings towards the TV and have Pyo, Eddie, and the "Asian Elvis" Brock Campbell and I be called every slur in the book.
Interestingly, I recall that as I downed more Keith's, contrary to most, I got progressively more quiet. Eddie commented "I've never seen Sen so quiet. OK this is your last one." Funny, in my underage years, I was the guy that whipped bottle caps, sang along to Michael Jackson's The Way You Make Me Feel, and made death threats. Now, I drink and instead of losing inhibition, suddenly all kinds of trivial shit starts gnawing at me, like "fuck, I'd better get started on that assignment" or "how am I gonna get through ACTSC 446" or "when will I find my better half" or "where's my next internship gonna be." Really trivial stuff. Next time I'm going to limit myself to a few so I don't reach this state.
All in all, much merriment was had by all. To me, it's a welcome reprieve from the Monday-Friday grind, because I find a lot of people (particularly in my program) are boring clones preoccupied by shallow, superficial stuff and assignments and co-op interviews, and lack a wordly quality to them. A classic example would be the cookie-cutter poser TABs that flood Fed every Thursday night. And really with these groups, to borrow Eddie's line, once you get to know one, you know them all.
Assessing the group dynamic here is interesting, in so far as no two peoople are genuinely alike. There's diversity, with a certain individuality to each person, each with their own quirk and idiosynracy, and each contributing in some way. And with such a diverse array of ethnicities and personalities, one would suspect it would be like Sarajevo in 1994, but really underlying it there is a healthy mutual respect. All in all it makes for a very interesting group dynamic.
